Reflective Synopsis

When I first attempted to read what Managing E-Learning offered I felt overwhelmed and that I would not be able to have an understanding of the tasks that I was to complete.
I then decided to go into this course with an open mind and discovered that Managing E-Learning has been an extensive introduction to the world of the Internet and programs that are accessible.
I have now created my own blog which I am very proud of and it consists of a number of technologies I have had to investigate to help improve and expand on my teaching strategies for the coming many years. The Blog that I had to complete was a component of the Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood) Course that I am currently studying at Central Queensland University. I am now writing my reflective synopsis of all the communication technologies that I have learnt about and studied over the last term.
The Start of Managing E-Learning was very overwhelming with new knowledge on ICT’s which I had no idea what it meant now I know its definition is Information and communication technologies and is the phrase used to describe a range of technologies for gathering, storing, retrieving, processing, analysing, and transmitting information. The course stepped learners in gently explaining how learners learnt by talking about the learning engagement theory which emerged from the author’s Greg Kearsley & Ben Shneiderman and their experiences from teaching in electronic and distance education environments. The main idea of the engagement theory is that students must be meaningfully engaged in learning activities through interactions with others and worthwhile tasks and believe that technology can help the engagement in such ways which are difficult to achieve otherwise. So to summarise the engagement theory is intended to be a conceptual framework for technology-based learning and teaching.
The course then flowed onto learning about Internet safety and how Cyber safe schools are creating a teacher’s guide to Internet safety to help specifically for classroom teachers, school librarians and school leaders in primary and secondary schools because with technology becoming rather influenced in schools these Internet safety systems have to be in place so children can be monitored.

The course outline then moved onto Avatars and the usage of them.
Avatar is a computers representation of himself/herself or alter ego which is an object representing the user. an Avatar can be in the form of a three dimensional model such as used in computer games or an Avatar can be a two dimensional (Picture) or a one-dimensional user name which is used on Internet forums.
Avatars can be used to introduce something new to a website or classroom teaching.
Avatars can also just be simply used to create humour or also to help Children and Adults with poor reading skills. Voki Avatars can be created for free and used as you feel. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about avatars and creating them and believe they could be used with such ease for portraying small pieces of information in classrooms from k-12 and would be entertaining and keep the children’s concentration.
Once having an understanding of a simple avatar the course moved onto making e-portfolios and one of the ways we learnt was using a website called Mahara E-portfolio which is a professional and flexible design to set up a e-portfolio.
The features Mahara contains are weblog, resume builder and social networking system, connecting users and creating online learner communities. Mahara is also a quicker way to connect and be integrated into moodle.
I found Mahara very difficult to use at first and realised that it was going to take more than an hour of exploring the website to understand how to use it but now I am slowly finding my way around the website and has found it is very useful for group assignment tasks which we have been asked to use.
We also learnt how to use blogs in this course. Blogs are a shortened term for Weblog and are a form of a Web Based journal. This isn't the first time I have used a blog but let’s say it has been a few years since I first started a blog so I felt a little inadequate as to how and what to type but I feel I have tackled the task at hand quiet proficiently.
My knowledge of blogs is that are created by the user to track information that they wish others to follow. The creator of the blog is then able to continue to update the blog when new information has occurred.
We were asked to set up a blog for our assignment in this course and I found it rather interesting and it kept my concentration on the task and I feel I would use blogs in other forms of keeping information.

And I also believe that blogs would be useful tools for schooling educators to use and teach to their learners to use because it would be an expressive way to post assignments or forums of subjects being taught.
Blogs would simplify portfolios in Early Childhood centres because it would counteract a lot of printing and wasting of paper and both parents and teachers would be able to update the happenings of the day or weekends and be able to upload photos of video footage.
RSS which stands for Really Simple Syndication is basically quick and efficient way to read web blogs and news’s. I didn’t quite understand the full purpose of an RSS Really Simple Syndication once I first read about it but now I have created my blog I can now understand that it is an easy and quick way to keep up on other people’s blogs you may be following. I have found that Google Reader is the simplest form of an RSS-Really Simple Syndication to use and there are YouTube clips to help navigate around the website if still struggling. That’s how I was able to understand how to use an RSS-Really Simple Syndication and feel I will be continually using it throughout my time spent on the Internet.
PowerPoint’s have been a largely used resource for schools and their learners to deliver their information across to other students and teachers for years and i have used PowerPoint’s for much school, TAFE and University Assignments and believe they are useful to portray information but sometimes they can become droaning and process too much information. So I have discovered is to keep information posted on the PowerPoint short and simple and dot points so people viewing the PowerPoint can still listen to your speech and be able to read what is written on the screen without getting to confused and losing point of what you are trying to address.
My understanding of a Wiki was no idea when I first learnt about them but now I can confidently say Wiki is a Hawaiian word described as "fast" and Wiki is now described as to be "What i Know is". Ward Cunningham is the developer of the first wiki software and was originally described as WikiWikiWeb that was the simplest online database that could possibly work. Wikis are software that provides Web publishing opportunities to be individual or collaborative. Wikis are created to serve a specific purpose and users can use their editorial rights to remove material that is considered not on topic.
Wikipedia is a free web based multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non profit Wikimedia fountain.
It contains 15 million articles that have been written by volunteers all over the world.
Wikipedia was launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and is currently the largest reference work on the Internet.
I had no idea what a Wikipedia was until i needed to look up the meaning of a word and a site for a Wikipedia appeared and i clicked on it and found it was basically an Internet dictionary once I browsed around the website it became something I turn to often when needing a hand with an explanation.
YouTube was a website my sister introduced me to a few years ago and i was unsure of its background but now I can comfortably use YouTube and find it quiet helpful. YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. YouTube was created in February 2005 by three former Pay Pal employees
YouTube seems to be becoming a largely growing website that people of all ages are using to post videos. There are useful Clips that people have created on putting mechanical things together to clips that are of just people singing in front of a camera. YouTube seems to be a place to use freedom of speech through a video camera.
In conclusion my knowledge I believed I had once of the Internet was adequate but I was short lived once I started this course and was opened up to many other WebPages and usages of the Internet.
I have learnt so much over the last term of studying this course and believe it has opened my thinking of using other programs to teach a lot differently and believe my teaching aspects will have variety of portraying information to learners.

Power Point

Microsoft PowerPoint's a presentation program which is developed by Microsoft.
It is a presentation software that allows you to create slides, handouts, notes, and outlines.
I have for many school and TAFE assignments used PowerPoint to deliver my information and believe they help with information that needs to be presented but with a lot of new up and coming communication technologies PowerPoint's may need to be upgraded and learn to add a lot of different forms of presenting information.
the Following YouTube Clip is a point that adds to my belief that PowerPoint's need to be updated.

i believe PowerPoint's can still be used in the classroom atmosphere to present information to learners but may need to add more enthralling objects throughout the presentation to keep the viewers interested.
